My name is Kate Pankoke. I am a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and the daughter of a 10 year breast cancer survivor. To help raise money and awareness for breast cancer, I have designed and am constructing a dress that will be partially covered with breast cancer ribbons.
I am collecting donations of $1 or more to purchase a ribbon that will be placed on the dress in honor of a friend or family member who has encountered breast cancer. Light pink ribbons will be inscribed with the names of breast cancer survivors. Dark pink ribbons will memorialize those who have passed on. Net proceeds from the donations for the dress ribbons will be donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Upon completion, the Breast Cancer Ribbon Dress 2006 will be auctioned, with the proceeds from the auction also going to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
I chose The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and their pink ribbon campaign because of their commitment to achieve prevention and find a cure for breast cancer. A minimum of 85% of all funds raised through The Breast Cancer Research Foundation goes to breast cancer research grants and awareness programs. For more information on the Foundation, please visit their website at http://www.bcrfcure.org.
It will take over 600 mini breast cancer ribbons to fill the sash of the dress. To date, I've collected nearly 170 ribbons. It will still take many more ribbons to complete the dress! If you would like to make a tax-deductible ribbon donation in honor of someone who has had breast cancer, you may click on the Make A Ribbon Donation link on the left side of this page to download a form and make a contribution by mail.
